In celebration of the centenary of this momentous event, on Sunday 4th June 2006 the Aldershot & District Bus Interest Group join forces with Stagecoach in Hants and Surrey to stage a unique and very special joint event.
Colonel Joslin and Andrew Dyer officially opened the Centenary Running Day by travelling over the original Aldershot - Farnborough route in Dennis Lance 220 to celebrate the one hundred years since the first bus ran.
For the 100th anniversary of the Aldershot & Farnborough Motor Omnibus Company, predecessor of the Aldershot & District Traction Company, the two company successors, Stagecoach in Hants & Surrey and Arriva in Guildford and West Surrey have painted three of their modern buses using a traditional Aldershot and District livery. Stagecoach have repainted theirs in an accurate reproduction of the classic livery while Arriva have used a little artistic licence with a version of their corporate livery using the Aldershot and District colours. The two Stagecoach vehicles are a Northern Counties bodied Volvo Olympian P228 VCK and a Plaxton bodied low floor Dennis Dart T593 CGT. Arriva also chose a Plaxton bodied low floor Dennis Dart P288 FPK. This is keeping with a tradition started by Alder Valley in 1987 when they celebrated the 75th anniversary of Aldershot and District by painting a Bristol VR and a Leyland National in the traditional colours. It only remains to be seen what may happen in 2012 for the true centenary of the formation of the Aldershot & District Traction Company Ltd. |
