Help with Restoration

2008 saw important anniversaries for two ex 'Aldershot and District' buses.

Dennis Lancet J3

SIXTY YEARS AGE Dennis Lancet J3, with Strachan's 32 seat bodywork entered service and was based at Guildford Depot (near in fact to the Dennis' factory). Its registration number is GAA 580 - fleet number 944, (when these were introduced).

Currently this vehicle is in captivity, awaiting a deal of work, especially carpentry, to restore it to its former glory. It yearns for a dedicated bunch of serious enthusiasts in order for it to once more travel the roads of the south of England. Mechanically it is reasonably sound. And early work would need to be exercised upon its present Surrey site.

The second vehicle was introduced into 'Aldershot and District' service in May, 1958 - so 2008 was its FIFTY YEAR ANNIVERSARY.

The Dennis 'Loline' was first operated upon 'A&D's service 14 between Aldershot and Winchester. 'A&D' has 34 such vehicles delivered.

SOU 456 (348) photoed upon a relief working at Chawton
(the home of Jane Austen sited near the rear of the bus).

It was not received from the bodybuilders, East Lancashire Coachbuilders Ltd. until May, 1958 - its fellows arriving from March 1958 onwards. This bus was allocated to Aldershot and Alton depots and operated frequently upon service 6 (Aldershot - Petersfield/Steep) in addition to the Winchester run.

Currently this vehicle keeps Dennis Lancet J3 company upon a Surrey site. To return to the road - not a great deal of work is envisaged - but again it is a case for 'many hands'. Bodywork is in a reasonable condition, and mechanically it is in fair condition.
